Passing Creslow: in a chamber above the old crypt, guests heard a silk gown sweep across the floor, though nobody was there.

Creslow Manor is an ancient house with a vaulted medieval crypt and a tall turret, once held by the Knights Templar and later used to pasture the royal cattle. The chamber above the crypt, with a Gothic doorway carved with grotesque faces, was said to be haunted by Rosamond Clifford, the Fair Rosamond of legend. Nobody saw her; sleepers heard her. A gentleman who spent a night there described soft footsteps and the rustle of a silk gown that grew violent, passed through the locked Gothic door, and stopped whenever he lit a candle. Victorian writers puzzled over why she should haunt a house with no link to her story.
