A lone tower in the fields, haunted by ghostly dogs and frozen children.
See it clearly
The ruined tower stands in an open churchyard reached only on foot, by bridleways from Cold Christmas Lane or Wadesmill. The tower itself is unsafe and fenced off, so don't go near it or inside.
Down this lane stands the lonely tower of Old Thundridge church, said to be haunted by ghostly dogs and frozen children.
Down Old Church Lane near the hamlet of Cold Christmas, a lone fifteenth-century tower is all that remains of Thundridge's old church, dismantled in 1853 when the village moved to the main road. Nearby once stood a solitary chimney stack of the vanished manor house, Thundridgebury; local legend said it was left so the owners could keep collecting rent, though a later and more accurate story held that it secured them a pew in the new church. The ruin now has a reputation as one of Hertfordshire's most haunted places, with tales of ghostly dogs, devil worship and children said to have frozen to death at Cold Christmas.
