  • Date13 February (Valentine's Eve; reputed appearance)

Near here is Moat Farm, where a murdered woman was said to rise from the water each Valentine's Eve and claim a life.

Much Hadham remembered a darker side to St Valentine's season. On Valentine's Eve, it was said, a ghost known as the Moat Lady rose from the moat at Moat Farm, and before morning someone would die. Often enough a traveller did die around the middle of February, if not always on exactly the right night. The Lady is supposed to have been murdered and sunk at the bottom of the moat by her killer, and she will go on claiming victims until her bones are found and given Christian burial. Moat Farm House is a listed building on a medieval moated site at Kettle Green.
