Hinchingbrooke House was a nunnery long before it was a mansion. One of the sisters, they say, never left.
Hinchingbrooke House grew out of a medieval nunnery before becoming the Cromwells' and later the Earls of Sandwich's mansion, and is now part of Hinchingbrooke School. Its best-known ghost is a nun, reported since the 1960s and nearly always at the back of the house, where remains of the old priory survive. Legend says she had a secret affair with a monk and both were executed when it was discovered. Skeletons later found hidden under a staircase in the house fed the tale. She is also said to haunt the nearby Nun's Bridge over Alconbury Brook.
