Up on the Gog Magog Hills: shout a challenge here by moonlight, the old story says, and a dark knight will ride out to meet you.

Around 1211 the chronicler Gervase of Tilbury wrote down a tale he said came from country people near Cambridge. If a lone warrior rode into the ringed hilltop camp at Wandlebury on a moonlit night and called out a challenge, a mysterious armed knight would appear and charge. The Norman baron Osbert son of Hugh tried it, unhorsed the phantom and led its black horse away as a prize, but was struck in the thigh by a thrown lance. At cockcrow the coal-black horse broke its reins and vanished, and Osbert's wound was said to reopen every year on the anniversary of the fight.
