Ahead, under West Wycombe Hill, are the tunnels where the Hellfire Club met. Visitors keep photographing a lady in white who should not be there.
Sir Francis Dashwood had these chalk tunnels dug into West Wycombe Hill in the mid-1700s, partly to give local men work, and his notorious Hellfire Club is said to have met in them. What its members actually did is unknown, which has fed rumours ever since. The caves also have ghosts. Staff and visitors report a lady in white called Sukie, a servant from the village inn who, in the usual telling, was lured here by local lads as a cruel joke and fatally hurt. Paul Whitehead, the club's steward, whose heart was once kept in the mausoleum above, is also said to wander here.
